First Aid Kit List

It’s important to have a well-stocked first aid kit in your home and workplace so you can deal with minor accidents and injuries. Many people also keep a small first aid kit in their car for emergencies.

Your first aid kit should be locked and kept in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children.

If you are a pharmacist or have a pharmacy store in Nigeria, you can apply to join Health2Wealth E-commerce Associate Program for pharmacist to promote our recommended First Aid Kit essential items.

Cotton Wool

High-quality cotton wool when used with antiseptic or saline solution it is ideal for cleaning wounds, grazes and cuts. For medical purposes, cotton pads are used to stop or prevent bleeding from minor punctures such as injections or venipuncture. They may be secured in place with tape.
There are three size of cotton wool recommended below namely small, medium and large.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a mild antiseptic used on the skin to prevent infection of minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. Use a diluted solution instead (3 to 6 wt%). You will see white fizz upon pouring this liquid on to open wounds, but it will burn less in comparison to spirit. Do not use in conjunction with spirit – use either one of these; not both. It may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or to relieve minor mouth irritation (e.g., due to canker/cold sores, gingivitis). Although Hydrogen Peroxide comes in various sizes, we only have one approved size for our recommended First Aid Kit.

Surgical Spirit

This is great for cleaning wounds, cuts and scratches. It is also great for disinfecting the skin prior to administering injections. If you get injured, wash the affected area thoroughly with water. This helps to remove debris and dirt. Then, clean the wound with surgical spirit. Yes, it will burn – but concentrated alcohol kills many bacteria and germs instantly, preventing the onset of infections.

Crepe Bandage

Depending on the injury at hand, you may need either a medium or heavy weight dressing bandage. Medium weight Elastoplast Crepe Bandages are used as a dressing retention, keeping gauze, wound pads or sterile compresses in place over an open wound.

Guaze Bandage

This is a staple at hospitals – very useful for bandaging/dressing wounds. Clean around the wound using cotton doused with surgical spirit; then apply betadine solution onto the wound. Place some betadine cream onto a gauze or cotton-pad and place it on the wound. Seal wound with another piece of gauze and then use surgical tape to hold everything in place. You just learnt how to dress a wound. Use cotton gauze only!

Plaster/Band-Aid

An adhesive bandage, also called a sticking plaster (or simply plaster) in British English, is a small medical dressing used for injuries not serious enough to require a full-size bandage. They are also known by the generalized trademarks Band-Aid(as “band-aid” or “band aid” in the US) or Elastoplast (in the UK).  Make sure to get the waterproof variety though – holds longer even in wet conditions.

Gentian Violet Paint

Gentian violet is an antiseptic dye used to treat fungal infections of the skin (e.g., ringworm, athlete’s foot). It also has weak antibacterial effects and may be used on minor cuts and scrapes to prevent infection.

Iodine

Iodine is a broad spectrum antiseptic for topical application in the treatment and prevention of wound infection. It may be used in first aid for minor cuts, grazes, burns, abrasions and blisters.

Scissors

You need something to cut the gauze and tape. A small pair will do. If you have been using your scissors for other purposes, disinfect them with spirit.

back to menu ↑

Deep Relief Cream

Deep relief cream not only helps fight infection, but also helps relieve pain. The product is used to treat minor aches and pains of the muscles/joints (e.g., arthritis, backache, sprains).

back to menu ↑

Thermometer

firstaid kit should contain a thermometer to measure body temperature. An oral digital thermometer is probably the best choice. Digital thermometers used in the ear are more accurate but also more expensive.

Face Mask

Face Mask contains a replacable one-way filter, that prevents the airborne passage of over 99% of the viruses and bacteria that cause diseases such as Tuberculosis and Hepatitis. It also acts as a physical barrier

It’s design gives the highest standards of bacterial and viral protection for the rescuer, and does not compromise air permeability. (Meaning the rescuer can breathe easily through the filter without extra effort being required).

Glove

Keeping yourself protected is the first priority of any first aider. The main tool of the first aider to avoid this risk is a pair of impermeable gloves. Gloves protect the key contact point with the victim (the hands) and allow you to work in increased safety.

Disinfectant

Antiseptic solutions such as Dettol are vital in any first aid kit as it speeds up healing of wounds and prevent further infection.

back to menu ↑

Hand Sanitizer

Using a waterless hand sanitizer after thorough hand washing is one of the most effective methods to eliminate germs. The soap and water removes both dirt and oil, and hand sanitizers can kill most germs.  Supply your first aid kit with the best Hand Sanitizers for your needs.

Painkiller Pills

You can buy these over the counter in most countries (Ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin). They help in numbing the pain in case you sprain your foot or take a fall; paracetamol also helps to reduce fever. However, do not overdose on painkillers as this can cause liver damage. Also, understand that paracetamol cannot treat the root cause of your fever – it simply brings down your body temperature.

Some sort of basic antibiotic (like penicillin)

This helps to combat minor infections. You can also open up a capsule and empty the contents directly onto a cut. You can use the same technique for a dental cavity as a SHTF situation, you might not be able to get to a dentist immediately.

Copy of Your Medical Insurance

This might not be useful in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Doctors and nurses might turn into zombies and we are pretty sure that zombies cannot read. Even if we are wrong, everybody knows that zombies are pretty dumb and they will not be able to comprehend the terms and legal clauses of your insurance policy. In all other cases, medical insurance is very helpful. If you get injured, people should be able to contact your family and friends. So include emergency contact telephone numbers as well.

First Aid Box

The first aid kit is a box where medical supplies required for giving first aid is kept. We have three sizes of First Aid Box for our recommended first aid kit namely small, medium and large.

There is a wide variation in the contents of first aid kits based on the knowledge and experience of those putting it together, the differing first aid requirements of the area where it may be used and variations in legislation or regulation in a given area.

The international standard for first aid kits is that they should be identified with the ISO graphical symbol for first aid (from ISO 7010) which is an equal white cross on a green background, although many kits do not comply with this standard, either because they are put together by an individual or they predate the standards.

Conclusion & Call For Contribution

The Ultimate First Aid Kit Contents List is part of our on-going effort to promote first aid safety at office, home, car, school, emergency, survival, camping, hunting and sports for preventive and curative health to save life!

For safety’s sake, keep your medicine kit in a zippered bag or secure box and store it out of children’s reach, but close enough that you will be able to remember and find it quickly in an emergency. Most items in a first aid kit are dangerous in small hands. It’s better to store medications on a high closet shelf rather than in the bathroom because the warmth and steam from showers can make drugs break down faster. Check the contents of your kit every three to six months, and replace the things that you have used or that have expired. It helps to include an inventory of everything that should be in your kit, so you can figure out what needs to be replaced.

Consumers can go through our list of items for first aid kit and order a recommended kit or submit Buyer’s Ad if you want a custom kit package.
